Home Repair
Regina acquired her parents’ home in 2017. But time can be hard on a house, especially for a home built in 1955.
A friend told her about the Healthy Homes’ home repair program and after her application was accepted, Healthy Homes performed an inspection of her house. They found that the exterior needed a full face-lift, including a new roof, siding, windows, doors and porch railings. Despite all the work involved, the renovations only took about a month.
Many of Ms. Barnett’s neighbors are long-time community members. They had watched her grow up and were glad when she moved back into the family home. They were also delighted to see the house transform over the course of the renovations.
A family home. That’s how Alice Poindexter refers to her home in the South Linden area. This description is fitting since the walls have now housed several generations of her family.
Time had taken a toll on the house and after receiving a flyer for Healthy Homes, Alice decided to give it a try. Through the program, her home received new siding, trim and painting. Alice loved that she was able to choose the color of her “new” home.
She says she’s no longer ashamed to have friends over and now receives numerous compliments as people walk by.
“It gives the whole street a new outlook. I feel like I live in a whole other community.”
Alma moved to the Southern Orchards community with her three children in June 2017. Their new home had been vacant for years and was damaged from two previous fires. She hired a contractor to help with the major renovations, but began to worry when she saw no construction progress. Alma was quickly running out of money and resources.
But then a neighbor told Alma about Healthy Homes. Through the repair program, Alma’s home received a full exterior renovation, including new roofing, siding, painting, landscaping, windows, doors, gutters, walkways and a safe front porch.
Alma’s family finally has the home they deserve; a place of comfort, shelter and safety, a refuge and a foundation.
“When I opened the letter that said we were approved, I started crying. With this help, we’re creating a more beautiful neighborhood and a safe home for my children.”
